Laser hair removal vs. skin peeling – when can it be done?

Technological advancements have also impacted the cosmetic industry, which is most evident in laser epilation treatments. These modern hair removal methods allow us to effectively make our skin perfectly smooth and silky, without irritation. However, there are a few tips to remember to avoid unattractive skin changes after laser hair removal procedures. Find out if skin peels are recommended before or after laser epilation.

Laser epilation and treatment guidelines

In every laser hair removal clinic, specialists provide specific recommendations on how to prepare for the laser epilation procedure. To properly prepare for hair removal with a laser beam, we recommend consulting with a cosmetologist. Only then can the appropriate laser hair removal method be tailored to the needs of the patient.

Check out the most important rules to follow if you wish to undergo laser hair removal:

  • do not use body care products with strong effects that contain alcohol, benzoyl peroxide, or salicylic acid,
  • refrain from tanning the skin – naturally or using a solarium – for up to 6 weeks before the procedure,
  • the day before laser hair removal, shave the treated areas with a disposable razor,
  • avoid using tweezers, electric epilators, or wax for 6 weeks before the scheduled visit,
  • discontinue herbal and photosensitizing medications that could cause adverse effects during laser hair removal,
  • two weeks before the planned laser epilation, avoid aesthetic medicine treatments such as fillers, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels.

We also recommend avoiding skin peels immediately before and after laser hair removal. Before the procedure, the skin should be perfectly clean, whereas after hair removal, the tissues are somewhat weakened and sensitive. Peeling in such situations could cause discomfort and redness.

How to proceed after laser hair removal?

During the recovery period after laser hair removal, it is important to use soothing skin care products such as cooling creams or aloe-based lotions. Avoid peeling and other treatments that could over-stimulate the skin. If redness or swelling occurs after the procedure, these symptoms typically disappear within three days.

Does laser hair removal cause side effects?

All cosmetic procedures carry minimal risks of side effects. In laser epilation, these include swelling, redness, and skin irritation. To minimize negative effects, it is advisable to consult an experienced cosmetologist and avoid using cosmetics and other chemical agents that could react with the laser beam before the procedure.

Peels and laser hair removal – can they be done? Summary

Mechanical home peels, such as sugar scrubs, which can be done at home, are not recommended before or after laser epilation. Why? Because such actions cause micro-injuries to the skin and can also trigger allergic reactions and bacterial infections.

It is advisable to refrain from using mechanical and chemical peels at least two weeks before and after laser hair removal. This ensures no inflammatory conditions appear on the skin surface. Of course, after laser epilation, the skin can be gently exfoliated within a few days, but cautiously – definitely not with strong peeling agents.
