Drug Allergy Rash – What Is It?

Rash is a skin and mucous membrane change that resembles a simple rash. It can be caused by factors such as medications and viruses. Drug rash is a type of allergy to certain medications. Viral rashes may also occur, caused by inflammatory diseases. Rashes can also appear during pregnancy. The changes affect the skin and mucous membranes of the body. What characterizes maculopapular and maculopapular-papular rashes?

What is a drug rash?

A rash is a change within the mucous membranes and skin, usually in the form of spots, nodules, blisters, or pustules. It can occur in the nasal cavity, oral cavity, as well as on the genital organs. Usually, it is a reaction to medications or infectious diseases. An allergic reaction to a drug usually develops only after three weeks of consumption of the substance. They can be caused by drugs such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, diuretics, anticonvulsants, sleeping pills, beta-lactam antibiotics, or remedies for rheumatism.

Another cause of rash is viral or bacterial infection, such as streptococcal infection, chickenpox virus, HIV, mononucleosis, measles, or rubella. Rash in the form of spots and nodules on the skin also appears as a result of hormonal changes in late pregnancy, as well as a reaction to chemicals or toxic plants.

Maculopapular and papulopustular rash – what are the causes?

In medicine, many causes for such changes are indicated. One of them can be the use of certain medications, which is called drug rash. Virtually any medication can lead to its appearance, as different organisms react differently. However, there is a group of preparations that tend to cause rashes. These include antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, anticonvulsants, and diuretics.

Drug rash – where does it most often appear?

When a drug rash appears, it is important to determine its origin in a specific patient. Drug rashes are usually located on the upper limbs and torso. Less frequently, they occur on the lower parts of the body. For many people, rashes can take the form of spots and papules. Drug rashes most often do not appear on mucous membranes, feet, or hands.

Drug rash – Symptoms

Drug rash most frequently occurs symmetrically and affects different parts of the body. It may happen that changes affect the genital organs. Depending on the medications, various skin changes can occur on the patient’s body. Similarly, the same medication can cause completely different symptoms in two different people. Usually, we can distinguish hives, painful blisters, necrotic changes, pigmented changes, and disturbances in nail and hair growth.

Diagnosis and treatment of rashes

The diagnosis of rashes is based on a detailed medical interview. The doctor may also recommend exposure tests, but they are usually performed in hospitals due to the risk of an anaphylactic reaction. Drug rashes usually require simply stopping the provoking drugs. However, it’s advisable to visit a doctor to avoid serious complications. If discontinuing the medication does not resolve the issue, antihistamines may be necessary to block the allergic reaction.
