Laser Hair Removal - What is this procedure exactly?
The laser hair removal procedure involves removing unwanted hair using a laser beam, which penetrates deep into the skin and quickly damages hair follicles. Simultaneously, laser depilation also destroys the roots of the follicles, which means the hair will not regrow for a long time. It is one of the types of depilation, alongside IPL depilation.
Laser depilation (Warsaw) - how does it work?
The mechanism of laser depilation is extremely simple. The light beam reaches the hair follicles, where it is absorbed by melanin — converting it into thermal energy, which can irreversibly destroy the follicles through selective photothermolysis. Then, the process of destruction of the hair follicle’s matrix cells occurs. For laser depilation to be effective, proper laser power must be selected — it varies depending on the hair color (which is influenced by the amount of melanin in the cells).
How to prepare for laser hair removal?
Zanim zostanie rozpoczęte usuwanie owłosienia laserem, konieczne będzie skonsultowanie się z kosmetologiem. Podda on ocenie stan owłosienia, typ oraz rodzaj skóry, jak również przeprowadzi dokładny wywiad. Od takich informacji zależna jest skuteczność zabiegu depilacji – właściwe dobranie mocy światła zapewni skuteczne zniszczenie cebulek włosowych.
- przez minimum dwa tygodnie przed zabiegiem (oraz tydzień po jego przeprowadzeniu) należy unikać opalania (naturalnego i w solarium), jak i używania chemicznych peelingów, samoopalaczy czy kremów brązujących,
- przed oraz po zabiegach na okolice poddane depilacji nie można stosować dezodorantów, perfum oraz innych typów substancji mogących zadziałać drażniąco,
bezpośrednio przed poddaniem się zabiegowi nie wolno zażywać leków o działaniu przeciwzapalnym i przeciwbólowym, jak również suplementów i herbat ziołowych,
przyjmowanie antybiotyków powinno się zakończyć na dwa tygodnie od ostatniej dawki przed planowanym zabiegiem,
wszelkie przeziębienia, choroby czy opryszczka będą wykluczały pacjenta z zabiegu.
Należy mieć na uwadze, iż tkliwa i zaczerwieniona skóra po zabiegu, jest czymś zupełnie normalnym. Często na skórze pojawia się obrzęk okołomieszkowy. Efekt ten powinien ustąpić po upływie 1-3 dni.
Laser hair removal — how many sessions are necessary?
For significant hair reduction, about 6 to 8 sessions are sufficient — the laser light destroys hair follicles in the growth phase, and repeated treatments ensure the highest effectiveness of depilation. The recommended number of sessions is often not enough, but in some cases, fewer sessions may suffice. It all depends on the hair type, skin color, and laser choice. To maintain a permanent effect, follow-up treatments are recommended.
Which parts of the body can be subjected to laser depilation?
Although the mechanism of laser hair removal may seem somewhat drastic, it is actually very gentle on our skin. It certainly causes less irritation compared to waxing or traditional razors. Therefore, laser hair removal can be applied to:
- face,
- arms,
- legs,
- armpits,
- back,
- abdomen,
- bikini area.
Many women are decided to undergo laser hair removal in the bikini area, especially before the summer season. Choices in this case include:
French waxing – involves removing hair from the groin and along the bikini line,
Brazilian waxing (also called deep bikini) which involves removing all hair in the bikini area.
Before starting a series of laser hair removal treatments, a consultation with a cosmetologist is necessary to assess the skin condition in these highly sensitive areas. After laser hair removal in intimate areas or other parts of the body, a special balm containing dexpanthenol or allantoin should be used. This will help soothe any irritation caused by the procedure.
What are the differences between waxing, shaving, or sugar paste hair removal and laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal differs significantly from older methods mainly in the durability of results due to thermal destruction of hair follicles, which prevents regrowth. Modern laser technology clearly outperforms frequent shaving with a razor or painful removal with sugar paste or wax, which provide only short-term results and require constant repetition. Laser hair removal is available at many clinics, so the procedure can be performed at a location convenient for us.
Laser hair removal - contraindications?
There are certain contraindications for laser hair removal treatments. These include pregnancy, breastfeeding, skin irritation or damage in the areas to be treated, and recent sun exposure. Sunbathing immediately after treatment should be avoided, making late winter or spring the best time to perform this procedure. Conditions that are contraindications include: blistering skin diseases, skin allergies, diabetes, vitiligo, and psoriasis.
Laser hair removal – possible side effects?
The risk of side effects varies depending on hair color, skin type, and adherence to pre- and post-treatment recommendations. The most common side effects include:
- pigment changes – laser hair removal can lighten or darken the treated area. Such changes can be permanent or temporary. Lightening mainly affects people who do not avoid sun exposure before or after treatment, and those with darker skin tone,
- skin irritation – swelling, redness, and temporary discomfort. All symptoms usually resolve within a few hours.
In rare cases, laser hair removal may cause blistering, pustules, scars, or other skin texture changes. Other rare side effects may include excessive hair growth around treated areas or graying of the hair.
Laser hair removal – why is it worth it?
Home hair removal methods or frequent shaving can be bothersome. These require repeated procedures, are temporary, and can cause skin reactions such as irritation, dryness, unattractive cuts, ingrown hairs, and discomfort.
