Everyone desires to have an ideally shaped body without the slightest flaws. Scars, cellulite, and stretch marks are hated by everyone, especially people who care about their health and appearance. The most sought-after body in today’s world is firm, athletic, and free of blemishes and imperfections. Interestingly, the issue of stretch marks and cellulite is not only a concern for women, as increasingly more men are affected too. Cellulite is clearly more common among women, but stretch marks are universal and affect both sexes.
Stretch Marks – Why Do They Occur?
There are two possible answers to this question: briefly, because the skin has been stretched too much, or using a more descriptive approach. So, when wondering how stretch marks form, it’s important to understand that skin is elastic and very stretchable, but even it has limits. The complex structure of elastic fibers and collagen provide the scaffolding for the skin. Due to their flexibility, the skin can withstand quite a lot of tension. However, if the tension occurs too suddenly or is too intense, it leads to breaking of the elastin and collagen fibers. These tears occur in the deeper layers of the skin and, like scars, are difficult to repair.
The causes of stretch marks can vary, but from the perspective of our body, the answer to why they form is simple: excessive or too rapid stretching of the skin damages the connections of elastin and collagen fibers. It’s important to remember that skin strength depends on individual characteristics of each person.
What Are the Causes of Stretch Marks?
The common opinion about the origin of stretch marks is that they only affect overweight people—in line with that assumption, the causes of obesity are linked to weight gain. However, this is not entirely true, and it does not show the full picture. Yes, being overweight or obese can promote the appearance of stretch marks, but it’s not about weight or excess fat alone—stretch marks appear when the skin is overstretched. As fat cells grow with weight gain, they cause the skin to stretch, sometimes enough to cause tears in the collagen fibers. This can lead to stretch marks. Since the main cause is not only obesity, what are other reasons for this phenomenon? There can be many. Causes of skin stretching leading to stretch marks include, for example, in young people, periods of rapid growth—an involuntary process. Certain types of physical exercise, especially those aimed at increasing muscle mass, can also cause tension in the skin that results in stretch marks. One of the most common causes is pregnancy. During nine months, the skin on the abdomen and breasts undergoes significant and rapid stretching. Proper skin care can certainly reduce the risk during this time, and it’s wise to prepare for the possibility of stretch marks after childbirth. Fortunately, modern aesthetic medicine offers many treatments for stretch marks.
