In summer, days are long and hot, encouraging us to spend time outdoors. During this time, we want to look our best: have smooth, tan skin that can be shown off wearing shorts and dresses. But does body hair removal go hand in hand with tanning? What if we want to get rid of hair permanently while still enjoying sunbathing? Below, we answer your questions about laser hair removal and tanning.
Laser Hair Removal (Epilation) – What does the procedure involve?
Laser epilation, known to some as laser hair removal, is a convenient alternative to traditional hair removal methods (using razors, wax, or epilators). A unique benefit of this method is that after a series of treatments, up to 100% of unwanted hair is permanently removed. The laser is a highly versatile device – it can smooth almost any part of the body: legs, underarms, face, or abdomen. Laser hair removal from bikini areas is also very popular (not only among women). Men often undergo depilation of the back and chest, as well as ears, neck, and buttocks. Results are visible after the first laser session, but a series of 4-6 treatments is recommended for complete smoothness.
Before laser depilation, a cosmetological consultation is performed. At this stage, the patient’s expectations are discussed, as well as their skin and hair parameters. The choice of specific equipment used for the treatment depends primarily on hair thickness and pigmentation. At Beauty Skin Clinic in Warsaw, laser hair removal is performed using the following equipment:
- Thunder MT – a device combining 3 technologies for satisfying results even for the most demanding hair types and skin tones;
- GentleLase – a gentle laser with an advanced skin cooling system for ultimate comfort during the treatment; ideal for delicate facial skin and intimate areas;
- Vectus – primarily designed for brunettes – the best solution for people whose hair pigmentation significantly differs from their skin tone;
- Motus – mainly used for removing fine and light hair, and excellent for epilation in blondes.
A single laser therapy session lasts from a few to several dozen minutes, depending on the skin area being treated. Treatments are performed at intervals of several weeks (according to the cosmetologist’s recommendations), and the full results can last for the rest of the patient’s life.
Is laser epilation a contraindication to tanning?
Like any cosmetic procedure, laser hair removal has a set of guidelines and contraindications. Both before and after the treatment, sun exposure should be avoided (this also applies to UV lamps used in solariums). It is also necessary to use photoprotection in the form of SPF 50 creams. A strong or recent tan can disqualify someone from laser depilation due to the risk of burns. This is a temporary contraindication, but when performed professionally, epilation can achieve lasting results that stay with us for a lifetime.
Laser Hair Removal – what else should you know?
Laser epilation is not a painful procedure, although highly sensitive individuals may feel some discomfort during and immediately after treatment. It is recommended to avoid skin irritants: UV rays, aggressive skin care (e.g., acids, mechanical peels), or overheating the body, such as during sauna use. Possible side effects of laser therapy, such as swelling, redness, or (less commonly) folliculitis, resolve on their own, but if discomfort is significant, specialized soothing products can be used.
