Healthy and well-maintained facial skin forms the foundation of proper appearance. Especially after winter and during summer, our skin needs treatments that thoroughly clean and regenerate it. One of the most common treatments performed in beauty salons is the so-called microdermabrasion. It is a safe procedure, provided it is carried out by an experienced beautician.
Microdermabrasion – what is it?
Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure also called micro peeling. It is based on mechanical exfoliation of the outer layers of the epidermis using a stream of microcrystals. Depending on the type of crystals used, options include: treatment with magnesium oxide particles, sodium chloride, or corundum (also known as aluminum oxide crystals). A new technique involves the use of diamond wheels.
Microdermabrasion – what does the procedure look like?
First, the skin must be thoroughly cleaned, degreased, and dried. After assessing the condition of the skin, the beautician selects the appropriate crystal size and the stream force, possibly also the power and speed of the diamond wheel. Then, the device head is moved across the face. The apparatus simultaneously removes dead skin cells and vacuums away impurities along with residual crystals. It is important that the patient wears special goggles during the entire procedure to protect their eyes.
When is it advisable to opt for microdermabrasion? – recommendations
Answering the question, when is it worth choosing microdermabrasion, it should be noted that this treatment is recommended primarily for people dealing with discoloration, enlarged pores, acne, or blackheads. It can also be effective in combating stretch marks, cellulite, or wrinkles. Due to its versatility, the procedure can be performed not only on the face but also on the back, décolletage, or neck. Microdermabrasion will be helpful for dull, tired skin showing signs of aging.
Microdermabrasion – what are the potential contraindications?
Unfortunately, microdermabrasion is not suitable for everyone. One of the main contraindications is rosacea. It should not be confused with common acne. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that requires specialized treatment.
If the skin has broken integrity at the site of the planned microdermabrasion, the procedure should not be performed until the wound heals. Additionally, micro-injuries created during the treatment may be vulnerable to infection. Microdermabrasion should not be performed if the patient has warts or herpes, or during fungal, viral, or bacterial infections. Furthermore, individuals with cancerous diseases or those undergoing oncological treatment should avoid microdermabrasion.
Microdermabrasion – recommendations
It is advisable not to perform this treatment during extremely cold winter or hot summer days. The best times for microdermabrasion are spring and autumn. If the patient is undergoing oral therapy with medications containing isotretinoin, they should wait at least six months before undergoing the procedure. After the treatment, redness, itching, burning, or tingling sensations may occur as a result of irritation. Rosacea may also appear. However, all symptoms typically resolve on their own.
